Sha-whaat? The Angelika closes its doors after 13 years of indie/foreign usually boring but sometimes awesome film.

On August 29 the Angelika was found shuttered with brown paper covering the windows. There was no warning. Just this note:

There have been some back and forth since then from Bayou Place and the Angelika with a bunch of he-said she-said bullshit. Pretty much Bayou Place says the Angelika pulled out of their lease after committing to it and the Angelika keeps sticking to their guns that Bayou Place kicked them out. Eh, at least the Angelika announced they will be looking for a new place in Houston. Keep your eyes peeled.

Houston performer and personality, That Purple Bastard has put together a day-long festival celebrating Houston’s underground Hip-Hop scene. FlyFest will make its debut on September 25th, 2010 from 2 PM until 2 AM at the historic venue Walter’s on Washington will feature performances from 20 local hip-hop artists.

Written by Mat Johnson and drawn by Simon Gane, Dark Rain tells a story of opportunists trying to exploit the plight of New Orleans in the days after the hurricane. At times it’s alternately funny and moving, but it’s always focused on a very sharp but simple story.

It tells the tale of a man desperate for money who wants to rob a bank in the chaos of the flood and enlists the help of a reluctant ex-con who could use the money to help with his child support. Things go from bad to worse when they realize they’re racing against an evil Blackwater type outfit of mercenaries to the bank. Very reminiscent of a Third Man type story set in New Orleans, this is a book very much worth checking out.

The book doesn’t just tackle the heist story, though, it captures a taste of the horror and confusion of the days after the hurricane and the immense sense of depression and loss that must have been present in the Superdome while residents waited far too long for aid. In fact, there were more than a couple of moments in the book set in the Superdome that almost brought tears to my eyes.

In the end the book is very optimistic, offering hope to those who choose to do the right thing.

Last Saturday, MixxWell Audio Lab had their first monthly event, showcasing the Visual Art of Will Harrison, “Big” Mike Hernandez, Alex Arzu, Mitch Mikey, Snell Face and Jonathan Jackson. Throughout the night, artists were also given the opportunity to create works of art along Westhiemer.  Shelby Hohl provided visual art, by timing video sets to a 140-160 bpm (beats per minute), perfectly made for djs to mix to. The Teachers of MixxWell showcased the skill they have to offer the folks that choose to enroll at the MixxWell School.

Local Deejays Dayta and Elroy Boogie laid down tracks ranging from Dub-step to dancehall. Mixxwell also offered free workshops before the event. So next time, make sure to come early to sharpen your skills.

 Mixxwell will be showcasing different visual artist every month along with a Special Guest Dj. And, of course, the Professors of Mixxwell will be there to show what they can offer as teachers. With a wide variety of Music and Art, expect to be surprised and walk away having learned something new about mixing, art and, those that make up the underground scene in Houston.

Parable continues his ventures on the road as he gears up for an upcoming release with Llamabeats (together forming THINK TANK). Mashed Potatoes is set for October 2010, as he also begins plotting for his upcoming solo EP set for first quarter 2011. The first single, “That Feelin’” tells a story of his introduction into the world of Hip-Hop and how it’s helped him grow, stringing along all the major musical influences in his bountiful career.

Brandon “N2ition” Riley filmed and edited the music video, which was shot in Chicago during a recent tour and follows Parable through the city as it culminates with a heated clash at a show. This single includes a v2.0 remix featuring world famous turntablist, DJ I-Dee.

First of all, Bun B is not my uncle.  He don’t even know my mama like that.

Really?  It seems like these days everyone has a blog or column about relationships.  Even Houston’s own, Bun B.  That’s right.  People write in with questions and B. gives responses/advice.  It’s not bullshit or jokes either.  This dude is giving real advice.  When I clicked the link and checked out his column on ParlourMagazine.com, titled Ask Uncle Bun B on Choosing a Mate and Claiming Your Power, I expected to find advice like: “That hoe can go ‘head, if she ain’t feelin it. She ain’t goin’ nowhere, she love how I’m drillin it.” or perhaps lessons on what “ridin’ sidesaddle” actually means.  But he’s really talking about relationships and he stands a chance at putting a lot of the current relationship columnists to shame.  I never doubted him, though.  With lyrics like “Cause whats a hoe with no pimp, and whats a pimp with no hoe?” you know he’s a family man.  So if you don’t quite understand or know the game just yet, check out Bun B’s new column. As absurd as the name is (for real, Uncle Bun B?), it’s worth a quick read.

Monday night at Minute Maid Park a local Douchebag bailed on a foul ball, letting his cute girl take a baseball off her elbow.

Since the incident happened at an Astros game, no one in Houston cared until the story of “Bo the Bailer” went national.

Astros third baseman Chris Johnson fouled off a 2-2 pitch down the third base line during the bottom of the fourth inning against the Atlanta Braves.

Rather than catch the screaming liner, or protect his girlfriend Sarah, some bitch-made Tool named Bo jumped out of the way, scared of the ball.

Astros field reporter Patti Smith interviewed the couple and basically called Bo out for being a little bitch. Watch Patti’s interview here.

“I was like ‘baby, I’m gonna get hit’ and he was like ‘no you’re not. I’ll catch it’… he just bailed,” Sarah told Patti.

Instead of saying sorry during the interview, Bo thought it was great his lady got hit and came up with the lame excuse, “I was gonna catch it, but then it was in the lights, and I lost track of it,” Bo explained.

But Patti wasn’t buying his bullshit.

“Next time go towards your girlfriend, protect her. Don’t go the other way like a chicken.”

After being put on blast on national television, Bo answered the way a true Douchebag would, “Huh? Alright.”

Bo kept the ball too.

Despite being Hot as Hell in the venue, the Sneaker Summit turned out to be a smashing success.  Don’t sleep on the Winter Sneaker Summit.

Laurence Fishburne’s daughter made a flick. Yes – one of Those kinds of flicks.

Montana “Chippy D” Fishburne will make her XXX debut in porn titled “Montana Exposed”, says Vivid Entertainment’s website. The dirty movie drops Aug. 18, but not if you believe the hype from urban porn director Brian Pumper – a.k.a. Boomer, B Pumper and Bling Man (his rap name).

B Pumper won Best Director for his body of work at the 2010 Urban X Awards and said in an interview with Chippy D, filmed in a Los Angeles subway, that Chippy D filmed a scene in Freaky Empire’s “Phattys Rhymes and Dimes 14”.
