Dallas, Austin Gayer than Houston, Survey Says:

- by D.L. Gonzalez

Austin as the most gay/lesbian tolerant city in Texas shouldn’t be a surprise, but now H-town is officially less gay than our rival metro, DFW.

UCLA scholar Gary Gates came up with a Gay/Lesbian Index to measure the level of gayness in U.S. cities. Read the full story here: http://www.thedailybeast.com/blogs-and-stories/2010-07-20/the-20-gayest-cities-in-america/

Austin finished strong in 7th place on the index, boasting contributions to the LGBT community like The Texas Gay Rodeo Association.

Dallas broke the top 20 at number 19 – holding it down for Texas LGBTs.

According to the story published by The Daily Beast, the creators of the Gay/Lesbian Index admit the data used in the survey was dubious at best, but nonetheless solid enough to dish out gayness ranks.

Be real sad, Houston. The survey added that gay cities are prettier, greener, perform better economically and have more ballin’ homes per capita.

Finally.  Anytime some corporation causes some disgusting atrocity, I start scanning Frontline.org and waiting with baited breath for them to sink their meritorious teeth into the offender at hand.  And here it is.  I couldn’t be happier to see that Frontline is joining forces with ProPublica and tracing BP’s disastrous history up to the most recent horror story: The Gulf Oil Spill.  Many of us have forgotten or never knew about the Texas City BP Refinery exploison.  We don’t remember that BP has been poisoning Texas City residents for years and we don’t know that they top the charts in OSHA citations (see charts below), Texas Air Quality violations and civil suits.  Texas already has the lowest standards for air quality in the country, yet BP manages to fuck up regularly.  Yeah. Note to the Texas Legislators, slaps on the wrist don’t hurt giants.

So, nearly 80 days ago, when our jaws dropped at the first images of oil spilling into OUR Gulf, there was an extra special stab for those of us that remembered that BP has been shitting on the Gulf Coast for years.

Frontline and ProPublica, thanks for remembering the past without revisionist lenses. And thanks for going against the big dogs with that perfect blend of deserved hate and truth.

Willful and flagrant violations for BP – 760.  Willful and flagrant violations for other refineries – 1.
